Sign: Signal that can be seen by someone else
-For example, fever, fast breathing, and abnormal lung sounds heard through a stethoscope may be signs of pneumonia.
-Symptom: Signal that is felt or noticed by the person who has it, but may not be easily seen by anyone else.
For example, weakness, aching, and feeling short of breath may be symptoms of pneumonia.
Lung cancer signs and symptoms
-Sometimes lung cancer does not cause any symptoms and is found during a chest x-ray done for another condition.
-Most people with lung cancer have one or more symptoms.
-However, the symptoms of lung cancer are similar to the symptoms of many other more common and less serious problems.
Cough
-Lung cancer can cause a new cough or a change in a chronic cough.
-The cough can be a dry or may produce sputum (phlegm).
-Shortness of breath
-Wheezing
A whistling sound when you breathe
-Chest pain
May be dull, sharp, or stabbing
-Voice hoarseness
-Headache and swelling of the face, arms or neck
-Coughing up blood
-Frequent lung infections, such as pneumonia
-Feeling very tired all the time
-Weight loss with no known cause
Arm, shoulder, and neck pain
-Caused by a tumor in the top of the lungs (called a Pancoast tumor).
Other symptoms
-Weakening of the hand muscles (due to pressure on the nerve that stimulates the arm)
-A droopy eyelid
-Blurred vision
